About this website.
Welcome to my personal website. My name is Donald J Russell as you might have guessed from the website name: DonaldJRussell.me.
Actually, this website is also about you and everyone else in the world. It is about our lives together on this planet. Through my lessons, original songs, poems, writings and blogs I will share my experience and wisdom with you and others willing to listen and learn.
Wisdom is “the quality of having experience, knowledge, and good judgment” according to a dictionary. Most wisdom comes from direct experience. But an easier and more efficient means of gaining wisdom is to learn from the experience of others. By learning from another’s experience you gain years of knowledge in a short time without taking years of trial and error and the suffering of extended ignorance. An old man said it took him 12 years to realize why he procrastinated. He discovered he was waiting for someone else (i.e. like mommy) to do it for him. Oops! That sure pulled my cover. In just a few minutes, he saved me 12 years of trial and error. What a deal! And, it was free. It did not remove all of my procrastinations but a lot of them. Or, if I continued to procrastinate I did not feel as guilty or as uncomfortable. Now I often just ask myself if I am waiting for someone else to do it? Or, do I even want to do it? Or, can I pay someone else to do it? Being aware of my role in the procrastination instead of its victim has put me in a much healthier mental relationship with things to be done. It allows me to be more engaged with an issue and take responsibility instead of just sulking and having the poor me’s. This example also demonstrates the freedom that comes from awareness. Awareness is a key ingredient to spiritual growth and awakening. The underlining thread of this website and my purpose is to raise the level of awareness one person at a time that brings peace and happines to each of us and the world.
In general, I like to teach, mentor and help others to improve their lives. You will see that my writings aim to do just that. My poems are turning into songs. Some poems are for humor or reflection. Others carry intended messages that will reach more people than poetry itself. You will also find a serial novel that appears on this website. The novel is rated MA. My blogs will turn into teachings and dialogs about life and things that I think are important in the world in which we live. One section will focus on spirituality which for me has been a life-long quest of discovery. There we go…awareness. Discovery widens one’s awareness. And, as Ram Dass called it, life is all spirituality… The Only Dance There Is … the name of his book covering lectures on an Eastern understanding of consciousness.
You will need to have patience with the following discussion. Patience by the way is another spiritual practice about awareness and spiritual growth. A number of years ago I started painting with water colors, I found myself liking abstract mostly because I could not draw. After using over 300 pieces of cheap paper to learn how watercolors mixed, flowed and dried, how brushes behaved when too wet or too dry and other discoveries about water color painting, I bought real watercolor paper. The expensive kind. I tried and failed many times to come up with a nice painting. Two of my trials I taped to the wall for me to look at as they dried. Both were headed to the trash can. A friend came by to visit. After asking me about one of the paintings on the wall, I told her it was just a practice piece and I was going to throw it away. She said that she really liked it. So I gave it to her. Another friend saw the second one and asked for it. I just shrugged and gave it to him. He framed it and hung it in his living room The colors complemented the new carpet and wall colors in his living room. It looked quite attractive and professional. I was even impressed and inspired by my own work that I was going to throw away.
There is a purpose of this discussion about my painting experience, so hang in there. As my painting improved. I took my first great nice painting to a friend’s frame shop. When picking it up a man walking in saw the painting and asked me where I got it. I told him I painted it and walked out. I didn’t realize until later that I think he really like it and may have wanted to buy it. My first professional painting and recognized by someone else. Wow! A number of times after that, I would show my new paintings to friends and be disappointed when they did not particularly like a painting. Then I realized they did not appreciate nor understand abstract art. That happened over and over until I saw that my disappointment was of my own making. I did not show my paintings to people who appreciated abstract art. I showed it to people who did not like abstract art or did not appreciate art in general. I set myself up for disappointments. I started to show may paintings to people who I thought would appreciate it. One woman said she preferred abstracted over realist paintings because anyone do those but abstracts are more interesting and from the soul. I got complements on my paintings.
So likewise, I have been trying to help people who do not want my help. I have been trying to educate people who are not interested in learning from me. I have written songs not heard, poetry not read and spiritual teachings not practiced. I have mentored a few people to stop smoking but very few. I mentioned meditations, readings, alternative health solutions and the benefits of certain foods or supplements. Even where people expressed interest or wanted solutions to problems, few followed up with questions or suggestions. I no longer chase people. I stopped pushing the rope. Thus, I am building this website as my personal source for sharing myself, my experience, my songs, my poetry, my writings and my spiritual discoveries for people who want to listen to my songs, read my poetry and increase their awareness.
If you have gotten this far then: Welcome aboard.
